Farewell to Fr. Barry Condron

The parish sadly bids farewell to Fr. Barry Condron, as he moves to Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, and expresses its gratitude.

We were very fortunate here, in the year 2000, to have Fr. Barry Condron appointed as C.C. to Castlepollard and to reside in Castletown-Finea, taking care of that area of our parish. This he did very diligently, and succeeded in building up the communities in both parts of the area, creating an atmosphere of pastoral care and love. He also endeared himself to the people here in Castlepollard. Coupled with his involvement in the catechetical work in the schools, in the whole diocese, he faithfully served as a priest in our parish, each week, as well. His work in the schools in Finea and Castletown was very effective in sustaining the staff and pupils and supporting the involvement of parents. That is much appreciated by everyone. His special care for the young and children is a charism of his share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ and their response to that was always positive and genuine.

Mingling and mixing with the people of Castletown and Finea, he was always warmly received and genuinely accepted totally. There is, naturally, then, great sadness among all, at his leaving us. Each child, each adult and each housebound or ill person feels this deeply, as they bid their farewells.

On the occasion of marriages, Baptisms and funerals, he could blend and empathise with all the families concerned and make sure the family occasion was properly celebrated liturgically, as well as being involved socially afterwards. He initiated and organised many parish events for fundraising and other ventures very successfully. In simple language, over the past 9 years, we have been gifted to have a very good priest among us, serving our people for Christ. We will miss him very much now. We wish him many blessings in his new posting and we pray that we will soon have a priest to assist Fr. P, with whom Fr. Barry worked so well, in the running of the whole parish.

POPE BENEDICT`S RECENT ENCYCLICAL "CARITAS IN VERITATE". ON INTEGRAL HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN CHARITY AND TRUTH.A VALUABLE INTERVENTION.

Pope Benedict, in the introduction to the encyclical, reminds everyone that charity is at the heart of the social teaching of the Church.Unless it is connected with the truth of the Gospel, this charity just remains interchangeable with a pool of good sentiments, helpful for social cohesion, but of little relevance.

He also reminds us that if profit becomes the exclusive goal in human development in our time,if it is produced by improper means and without the common good as its ultimate end,it risks destroying wealth and creating poverty. Here he deals with situations that we know much about in recent economic experiences worldwide; malfunctions of development: financial dealings that are "largely speculative", migratory flows "often provoked by some particular circumstance and then given insufficient attention" and " the unregulated exploitation of the earth`s resources". In the face of these interconnected problems, the Pope calls for " a new humanistic synthesis" noting how development today has many overlapping layers.. The world`s wealth is growing in absolute terms, but inequalities are on the increase" and new forms of poverty are coming into being.

He also deals with the scandal of hunger and expresses his hope for " equitable agrarian reform in developing countries"He dwells also on the question of respect for life," which cannot in any way be detached from questions concerning the development of peoples" affirming that " when a society moves towards the denial or suppression of life, it ends up no longer finding the necessary motivation and energy to strive for man`s true good."He also states that "Violence puts the brakes on authentic development and this applies especially to terrorism motivated by fundamentalism" These ideas are dealt with in the first three of the six chapters of the encyclical.Next week we can look at the remainder in similar summary form.

CASTLEPOLLARD, CASTLETOWN & FINEA PARISH

14th.June.2009.SOLEMNITYOF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.(CORPUS CHRISTI)

and Feast also of Sts; Davnet, Methodius and Rufinus.

HAVING A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EUCHARIST AND ALSO HOLDING DEEP RESPECT FOR THE REAL PRESENCE OF JESUS IN THIS MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT IS OF THE VERY ESSENCE OF OUR CHRISTIAN FAITH.

Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

In France this Feast is known as Fete Dieu, which literally means the feast of God.This is quite apt, as it intimates that the Eucharist is the presence of God among us.Since we believe that Jesus is God and the feast is in honour of the Body and Blood soul and Divinity of Jesus, surely one can say it is indeed the feast of God.The feast each year highlights for us that the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life, but it also gives us an opportunity to examine our own faith in the Mass and Holy Communion and the real presence of Jesus.

Faithfulness to and respect for the Mass is a lodestone of our Christian belief. When slippage occurs in these, our faith falters and we become careless about every tenet we should hold dear.Being loyal to Sunday and even daily Mass does make a difference in a person`s life. Its effects can be readily seen.Having a deep understanding of  and a high regard for the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist brings stalwart strength to a living faith. This feast reminds us  how important that is.

Through the apostolate of Adoration today, many people bear fine witness to the vital centrality of the Eucharist in personal and parish life. This giving of time in devotion and love to the Lord Jesus and waiting and watching with Him in prayer, helps to build up the body of the Church. It also brings many blessings and graces with it..

The ministry of those who are ministers of Holy Communion in a parish, also gives an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the Eucharist and bears witness to the community, that people in the church are willing to serve in the name of the Lord of the Eucharist, during a key moment in the Mass and by giving example of dedicated  daily living in the parish. We expect ministers of Holy Communion to live lives worthy of that ministry.

Of course we are most concerned today that people really know what the Mass is all about. It is felt that many do not know.Hence, Mass missing, treating Mass as another outing, putting sport, shopping and entertainment before Sunday Mass and not bothering to take the children to Mass, can be based on a lack of proper understanding of the Mass as well as carelessness, laziness and sadly apathy. On this feast, we should pray for a revival of faith in and understanding of the Mass among all our people, so that the call and challenge of the Lord Jesus will not be ignored in our time.May the Lord of the Eucharist deepen our faith and make us living members of His Body, the Church.

CASTLEPOLLARD, CASTLETOWN & FINEA PARISH

7th.June.2009.SOLEMNITYOF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY. and Feast also of Sts; Colman,Sabianus,Marie-Therese Soubiron,Meriadoc and Jeremiah. Last Day for Easter Confession and Communion.

WHAT DOES THE FEAST OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MEAN FOR US IN OUR DAILY CHRISTIAN LIVES IN THE CHURCH AND WORLD?

Feast of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Family Of God.

Last weekend we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Spirit. Jesus revealed who the Spirit is to us and spoke quite a lot to the Apostles about the Holy Spirit, especially in the time preceding and subsequent to His death and resurrection. He also spoke about the Father and to the Father in the presence of the Apostles and the people. They could see that He had a deep and intimate relationship with the Father,His Father, our Father. He revealed that the Father was Creator and Sustainer and Lord of all but that He was coequal with Him. "I and the Father are one" He taught that the Spirit emanated from the Father and showed the connection between the Spirit and Son by indicating that the Holy Spirit could not descend until He returned to the Father.

The intimacy and unity of the inner Family life of God was, then, revealed to us by Jesus. So, we know that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, equal persons but One God…One God in three Persons.

Apart from being aware of this Mystery and Truth and keeping it central in our faith lives, as we make the sign of the Cross,as we offer our prayers privately and in public worship, to the Father, through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit, we should govern our lives with the harmony that is in the life of the Most Holy Trinity. We know we have received all the Sacraments in the name of the Holy Trinity and so are united to the life of the Holy Trinity,by this grace, but this should reflect itself in the harmony that should be in our daily lives.

The harmony in the life of the Most Holy Trinity is based on love and so should the harmony we must have in our own lives too.Firstly, our harmony with God; that should manifest itself in the way we regard our faith and practice it in prayer, worship and right living.Jesus promised us that if we lives in such harmony with God, they, that is, the Holy Trinity, will come and live in us.We will also be bearing witness to Divine love.Secondly, harmony with the Church, the Body of Christ; each of us should feel at home in the church community and make sure we are active members, living out the call of our Baptism, and do our best to draw others into the community of faith by our apostolic endeavours based on the call and challenge of Jesus.Thirdly, we should be in harmony with others, in our family and outside and be the cause of bonding together in peace and not be instruments of conflict and lastly,we should be in harmony within ourselves, with a correctly informed conscience and a well disciplined life, based on the call of the Gospel. That could be a practical programme to honour the Most Holy Trinity. We should think and pray about it all.

WHAT POPE BENEDICT SPEAKS ABOUT IN HIS MESSAGE FOR THIS WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THOSE IN THE COMMUNICATIONS MEDIA.

World Day of Prayer for the Communications Media people.

The Papal message for this annual day is always very much to the point, and no less so this year. The theme for the day is; New Technologies,New Relationships;Promoting the Culture of Respect, Dialogue and Friendship. In his message, he stresses, what we know, that the new digital technologies are bringing about fundamental shifts in patterns of communication and human relationships. These changes are particularly evident among those young people who have grown up with the new technologies and are at home in a digital world that often seems quite foreign to those of us who, as adults, have had to learn to understand and appreciate the opportunities it has to offer for communications. He states that he wishes to address those who constitute the so-called digital generation and would like to share with them,in particular, some ideas concerning the extraordinary potential of the new technologies, if they are used to promote human understanding and solidarity. These technologies are truly a gift to humanity and we must endeavour to ensure that the benefits they offer are put at the service of all human individuals and communities, especially those who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable. The interactive nature of many of the new media facilitates more dynamic forms of learning and communication, thereby contributing to social progress.

He states that the desire to reach out to others and to be connected with them are very obvious in contemporary culture and are aided by the models and methods of digital communication. He encourages people of goodwill who are active in this emerging environment of digital communication to commit themselves to promoting a culture of respect, dialogue and friendship. And towards the end of the message, he calls particularly on young Catholic believers to be conscious that these means of communication can be very effectively used to proclaim the love of the Gospel; to bring the values on which their Catholic Christian lives have been built, reminding them that the proclamation of Christ in the world of new technologies requires a profound knowledge of this world, if the technologies are to serve our mission adequately. It falls to young people who understand these digital technologies well, to take responsibility for the evangelization of this "digital continent"Be sure, he tells them to announce the Gospel to your contemporaries with enthusiasm, through these media..

CASTLEPOLLARD, CASTLETOWN & FINEA PARISH

17h.May.2009.SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER. and Feast also of Sts;Paschal Baylon, Restituta and Thalassios the Libyian.

THE WEEK OF PREPARATION FOR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION IN THE PARISH. WE OFFER OUR PRAYERFUL SUPPORT TO THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES.

First Holy Communion Mass;Saturday 23rd May at 11.00.am.

There are 17 children for First Holy Communion from the parish on Saturday next. We welcome each one of them and wish them well.

Recently, they all met the Lord, the Good Shepherd, in their First Confession. All during the year, in 2nd Class they have been preparing for both Sacraments. The teacher, priest and parents have been involved in the work of preparation. Most of the work involved has been done in the classroom and we are very grateful to the teacher for working so committedly with the class.Practices have been taking place in the church and parents have attended preparatory meetings for both Sacramental occasions. The children are fully aware that they are meeting the Lord Jesus in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood in the Eucharist, as they receive First Holy Communion. It is important that we support that faith. We must pray that their faith in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist will deepen and become stronger in their lives.

Maintaining that faith growth, in practice, means it is nourished by personal prayer and family prayer and worship. It is important to state that while, First Communion Day, is a very central and focal one for the child, the family and parish community, it is the beginning of a whole way of Christian life that will ensure participation in Sunday Mass each Sunday and a development in learning more about the content of our religion every day of one`s life. It would be sad if First Communion day was treated like a once off social occasion, soon to be forgotten. This would be to miss the whole point of what such an important celebration is all about. It would also be a great pity that such a day would be marred by concentrating on an outward show related to dressing and fashion, bouncy castles and partying only, while gliding over the essential core of what the day is all about.Dressing suitably for the occasion and having a celebratory family meal are very much part of the day, but none of this should go overboard;simple ways are often best appreciated and valued by the child and all concerned.Parents should not be put under pressure, by commercial interests from outside, to celebrate in an exaggerated style unworthy of the spiritual occasion it is.The Church sees it as a day that Jesus is welcomed into the child`s life in a most intimate way, in the Eucharist, the beginning of a life pattern of active faith life which will bring joy and inner peace as well as healing and comfort throughout life and not just as a once off social occasion, overcelebrated and undervalued. We wish our children a very memorable day and many more besides, in union with the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist.
